Phono Preamps for Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Cartridges
Phono preamps are designed to match specific cartridge types, most commonly Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC). Each cartridge type has different output levels and loading requirements, and the phono preamp must be configured accordingly to achieve correct gain and frequency response. Some phono preamps support both cartridge types, while others are optimised for a specific design. Phono preamps are used exclusively with turntables, which generate the low-level phono signal that requires amplification and equalisation.
Phono preamps may be built into amplifiers or turntables, or used as standalone components. Dedicated external phono preamps are often chosen for greater flexibility, improved noise control and compatibility with a wider range of cartridges. Selection depends on cartridge type, system layout and how the phono stage integrates with the rest of the audio system. The output of a phono preamp connects to a standard line-level input on an amplifier or preamplifier for playback through speakers or headphones.
