Power Cables

Power cables are mains AC cables designed to supply electrical power from a wall outlet or power conditioner to audio components such as amplifiers, DACs, turntables and other hi-fi equipment. Unlike signal cables, power cables do not carry audio information but play a critical role in delivering stable electrical current to each component. In audio systems, power cables are selected based on current capacity, connector type and compatibility with local power standards.

Power Cables for Hi-Fi and Audio Equipment

In a hi-fi system, power cables connect individual components directly to the mains supply or to a power distribution unit. Cable construction, conductor gauge and shielding can influence how effectively electrical power is delivered, particularly for high-current components such as power amplifiers. Common audio components powered via dedicated power cables include digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), amplifiers and source components.

Power cables are available as terminated power cords or as bulk cable for custom termination. In Australia and New Zealand, power cables are fitted with region-specific plugs and connectors to meet local electrical standards. Power cables should always be selected to match the electrical requirements of the connected equipment and used in accordance with applicable safety regulations. Power cables should not be confused with speaker cables, which are used exclusively to carry amplified audio signals from an amplifier to loudspeakers.
