Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge

Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge: A Ready-to-Fit Nude Elliptical Upgrade

The Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge is a moving magnet cartridge supplied already fixed to Ortofon’s SH-4 headshell. It’s for turntable owners who want to upgrade their stylus without mounting and wiring a cartridge themselves. It stands out for three reasons: a nude elliptical diamond, a 5.5 mV output suited to a standard moving magnet phono input, and a headshell assembly that arrives ready to fit.

Who Should Choose the Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge?

The Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge is the second model in Ortofon’s 2M range. The 2M Red sits below it as the range’s entry point. The 2M Bronze, 2M Black and 2M Black LVB 250 sit above it.

The closest alternative is the standalone 2M Blue. It’s the same cartridge without a headshell, and it suits turntables with a fixed headshell or owners who’d rather use a headshell they already have. The pre-mounted version suits owners whose tonearm accepts the SH-4.

The choice between moving magnet and moving coil also shapes the decision. Ortofon recommends moving magnet cartridges to buyers who want an easy stylus-replacement upgrade path. It points listeners with more ambitious playback goals towards moving coil designs. The 2M Blue keeps you within Ortofon’s moving magnet family.

What Does Its Nude Elliptical Stylus Do in the Groove?

The 2M Blue is fitted with a nude elliptical diamond on an aluminium cantilever. A tipped diamond sits on a metal shank. A nude diamond has no shank, so it weighs less. Ortofon links this lower mass to faster response, more detail and reduced distortion.

The elliptical profile measures 8/18 µm. Its narrow 8 µm side radius sits closer to the shape of the cutting stylus that made the record than a spherical (conical) tip does. This lets it trace fine groove wall movements more precisely.

Tracking ability is rated at 80 µm at 315 Hz. This figure shows how large a groove excursion the stylus can follow before it loses contact. It matters most on loud, bass-heavy passages.

Will It Fit My Turntable’s Tonearm?

This pre-mounted assembly is designed for S-shaped tonearms with a universal headshell mount. Gold-plated terminal pins at the rear of the SH-4 meet the contacts inside the mount. Ortofon specifies them for reliable connection and signal transmission between headshell and arm.

It won’t suit straight tonearms with integrated headshells. It also won’t suit arms built for direct bayonet-connector cartridges, which plug into the arm end and fix with a single screw. Ortofon advises checking your turntable manual or manufacturer specifications for cartridge type, mounting style and tonearm compatibility before you buy.

Is the Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge Matched to My Tonearm’s Mass?

The Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge is a moderate-compliance design rated at 20 µm/mN. That puts it at the top of Ortofon’s 10–20 µm/mN moderate band.

Compliance and tonearm mass together set the system’s resonance frequency. Ortofon calculates it as F = 1000 ÷ (2π × √(M × C)). M is the total mass of the cartridge, headshell, screws and tonearm. C is the cartridge’s lateral compliance. Ortofon treats 7–12 Hz as optimal and recommends 10 Hz.

Taking the 16.7 g pre-mounted weight as the cartridge-and-headshell figure, a tonearm with about 9 g of effective mass gives roughly 7 Hz. Lighter arms raise the frequency towards 8 Hz. An arm of around 12 g drops it to about 6.6 Hz, inside the 6.5–7 Hz band Ortofon describes as usable. Heavier arms push it lower, where Ortofon warns the system might not work properly.

Check how your turntable’s maker quotes effective mass. If the figure includes the original headshell, replace that headshell’s weight with the 16.7 g assembly before calculating. Ortofon notes that low-mass arms, rated at 10 g or below, pair well with moderately high compliance cartridges like this one.

Which Phono Stage Settings Does This Cartridge Need?

The 2M Blue is a moving magnet cartridge with a 5.5 mV output at 1 kHz (5 cm/sec). That’s the level a moving magnet phono input is designed to receive. Ortofon recommends 47 kOhm load resistance, the usual default on these inputs.

Load capacitance should total 150–300 pF. The total includes the tonearm cable, interconnects and the phono stage’s input capacitance. It matters because the cartridge’s 700 mH internal inductance forms a resonant circuit with that capacitance, which shapes the upper treble. If your phono stage has switchable capacitance, choose a setting that keeps the combined figure within Ortofon’s range.

How Is the Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge Installed?

The Ortofon 2M Blue Pre-mounted Cartridge is installed by sliding the SH-4 into the tonearm’s mount and securing it. The cartridge already sits on the headshell, so there’s no cartridge mounting to do.

Balancing the arm with its counterweight comes before setting tracking force. Ortofon specifies 1.6–2.0 g, with 1.8 g (18 mN) recommended. Staying inside that range keeps the stylus seated in the groove at the pressure its suspension was designed for. Your turntable’s instructions cover alignment and arm settings, and Ortofon’s downloadable 2M Blue Premounted user guide covers setup.

How Does the SH-4 Headshell Affect Handling?

The SH-4 Black is an anodised aluminium headshell that Ortofon describes as lightweight and strong. Its long finger lift gives you a secure grip when lowering the stylus onto a record or lifting it off. The assembly comes in Ortofon’s black and blue finish, with a cartridge body made from polymer and aluminium.
