The 2MR Black is the 2M Black's generator and stylus combination rebuilt into a newly developed cartridge housing aimed at low-profile turntables. Ortofon has cut 3 mm from the body's height compared with the standard housing, so the difference between this and the regular 2M Black lies in the cartridge body rather than in the stylus or generator inside it. That height reduction is the detail that matters most if your tonearm was designed around a shallower headshell, since it's what allows the cartridge to sit correctly without raising or altering the arm.

Will it suit your tonearm's geometry?

Fitting the 2MR Black calls for nothing beyond the cartridge itself: its slimline body removes the need for spacers or shims under the headshell, and it mounts with two screws. This makes it a candidate for tonearms with limited vertical clearance, where a standard-height cartridge body would otherwise force you to add packing material or accept incorrect arm geometry once it's fitted.

Can you change stylus grade later without buying a new cartridge?

Stylus interchangeability is built into the 2MR Black, since its cartridge body accepts the full range of 2M styli from the entry-level 2M Red profile through to the 2M Black LVB grade. That means you can start with a lower-grade stylus and move up the range later by swapping the stylus alone, without replacing the cartridge body, generator, or wiring. It's a practical route for anyone who wants to spread the cost of moving up the 2M range over time rather than buying the top stylus grade outright.

What generator and stylus design sit inside the 2MR Black?

Stylus geometry on the 2MR Black is handled by a Nude Shibata diamond, mounted on an aluminium cantilever. The Shibata profile is slim and highly polished, giving it a wide contact area against the groove walls so it can pick up detail across the frequency range, including the higher frequencies where groove modulation is densest. Behind the stylus, the generator uses a quad-coil system with split pole pins, a coil layout that's specific to Ortofon's own cartridges, wired with silver-plated OFC coil wire to keep electrical resistance in the signal path low.

What load and tracking settings does your system need?

Output from the 2MR Black is rated at 5 mV at 1 kHz and 5 cm/sec, with a recommended tracking force of 1.5 g and dynamic lateral compliance of 22 µm/mN. Ortofon specifies a recommended load capacitance of 150 to 300 pF, a range your phono stage or tonearm cabling should fall within for accurate high-frequency response, since capacitance loading interacts with the cartridge's inductance to shape the top end of its output. At 6 g, cartridge weight is also worth checking against your tonearm's effective mass before fitting.
