What does its elliptical diamond do in the groove?

The Concorde 5E is fitted with an elliptical diamond stylus with an r/R 8/18 µm tip radius. The two radii describe a tip that’s narrower in one direction than the other. A spherical (conical) tip has a single radius.

Will the Ortofon Concorde 5E suit your tonearm’s mass?

The Ortofon Concorde 5E is specified at 18.5 g with a dynamic lateral compliance of 20 µm/mN, and both figures determine how it pairs with a tonearm. Ortofon’s guide calculates cartridge and tonearm resonance with F = 1000 ÷ (2π × √(M × C)). In this formula, M is the cartridge mass plus headshell and screws plus the arm’s effective mass, and C is compliance. Ortofon treats 7–12 Hz as optimal and 6.5–7 Hz as usable without problems.

The 5E’s mount is built in, so there’s no separate headshell figure to add. M becomes 18.5 g plus your arm’s effective mass. With C at 20 µm/mN, the formula reaches 7 Hz when M is about 25.9 g, which means an arm effective mass of around 7.4 g. It reaches 6.5 Hz when M is about 30 g, an arm mass of around 11.5 g. Check whether your turntable’s quoted effective mass includes a headshell, because that changes the result.

Ortofon’s guide classes 10–20 µm/mN as moderate compliance and states that low-mass arms, rated at 10 g or below, match well with moderately high and very high compliance cartridges.

What phono input does it need?

The Concorde 5E is specified at 4 mV output at 1 kHz and 5 cm/s, with a recommended load resistance of 47 kΩ. A 47 kΩ load is the standard setting for a moving magnet (MM) phono input, and 4 mV falls within the output range those inputs are designed to amplify. If your phono stage has adjustable loading, set it to 47 kΩ.

How do you fit and set it up?

The Concorde 5E is designed for no-tool installation. Its built-in bayonet mount means there’s no headshell wiring, unlike the four-pin half-inch mount described in Ortofon’s guide. A rubber ring comes in the box and sits between cartridge and tonearm. Ortofon states that it prevents overtightening and secures the fit.

What do the published measurements tell you?

The Concorde 5E is specified for a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz within ±3 dB. Channel separation is better than 20 dB at 1 kHz, which means signal leaking into the opposite channel stays below one tenth of the original voltage. Channel balance is within 2 dB at 1 kHz, so the left and right output levels differ by no more than 2 dB.

What’s it made from?

The Concorde 5E is built with a black polymer and brass body. An aluminium cantilever carries the diamond and sits in Ortofon’s proprietary stylus suspension. The generator uses a quad-coil system wound with oxygen-free copper (OFC) wire.
