Why Does the Ortofon MC X30 Use a Nude Fine-Line Diamond?

The Ortofon MC X30 is fitted with a nude Fine-Line diamond, and that stylus is its main point of difference at the groove. The diamond is the only part of a cartridge that touches the record. A tipped, or bonded, diamond is mounted on a metal shank. A nude diamond weighs less than a tipped one. Ortofon links that lower mass to greater responsiveness and reduced distortion. It uses nude diamonds in its most advanced hi-fi cartridges.

The Fine-Line cut has tip radii of 8 µm and 40 µm (r/R). Ortofon explains that finer, more advanced cuts make a larger contact area with the groove. They follow the groove more precisely and come closer to the profile of the stylus used to cut the record. Ortofon groups Fine-Line with elliptical shapes. What Phono Stage Does This Moving Coil Cartridge Need?

This moving coil cartridge is a low-output design, rated at 0.4 mV at 1 kHz and 5 cm/sec. That output calls for a phono stage with a moving coil input, or a step-up transformer feeding a moving magnet input. Ortofon recommends a load resistance above 50 Ω, so your MC stage needs a load setting above that figure. The MC X30’s internal impedance is 6 Ω DC resistance. Check that figure against the input specifications of any step-up transformer you’re considering.

Which Tonearms Suit the Ortofon MC X30?

The Ortofon MC X30 is a moderate-compliance cartridge. It’s rated at 15 µm/mN dynamic lateral compliance and weighs 8.6 g. Ortofon classes 10–20 µm/mN as moderate. Compliance and total system mass set the resonance frequency of the arm and cartridge. Ortofon targets 7–12 Hz and recommends 10 Hz. It treats 6.5–7 Hz and 12–14 Hz as usable. Outside those bands, it says the system might not work properly.

Ortofon’s formula is F = 1000 ÷ (2π × √(M × C)). C is compliance in µm/mN. M is total system mass in grams: the cartridge, plus the headshell and screws, plus the tonearm’s effective mass. At 15 µm/mN, a total of roughly 11.7–34.5 g keeps resonance within 7–12 Hz. About 16.9 g gives 10 Hz. Take away the cartridge’s weight, and the arm, headshell and screws have roughly 3–26 g to work with. About 8 g hits 10 Hz. Adding 26–31 g lands resonance at 6.5–7 Hz, inside the usable band.

Ortofon classes tonearms by effective mass. Low-mass arms are 10 g or less, such as early SME arms and the Grace 747. Moderate-mass arms run from 11 to 25 g, such as the SME IV, V and VI, Triplanar and Graham. High-mass arms exceed 25 g, such as Eminent Technology and Dynavector designs. Ortofon pairs moderate-mass arms with moderate- to low-compliance cartridges. Low-mass arms and most moderate-mass arms keep the MC X30 within 7–12 Hz. The heaviest moderate-mass setups land at 6.5–7 Hz. High-mass arms push resonance towards or below that band. To confirm the match, add your arm’s effective mass and your headshell and screw weight to the cartridge’s weight.

What’s Involved in Setting It Up?

The MC X30 is specified for a recommended tracking force of 2.0 g, so your tonearm’s counterweight or tracking-force dial must reach that setting. What Do Its Silver Coils and Magnet System Contribute?

The MC X30 is a moving coil design with coils wound from high-purity silver wire. Ortofon uses silver across the MC X Series for signal clarity. The coils sit within a magnet system developed for the X Series. It integrates a one-piece pole cylinder into the rear magnet yoke. Ortofon engineered this layout for maximum magnetic efficiency. It pairs the magnet system with the silver coils to give a clean, strong signal path.

Ortofon specifies a frequency response of 20 Hz–20 kHz within ±1 dB. At 1 kHz, it specifies a channel balance of 0.5 dB and channel separation above 26 dB. Channel balance compares the left and right output levels. Channel separation measures how much of one channel’s signal is kept out of the other.

The Ortofon MC X30’s body is a honeycomb-structured stainless-steel frame made by Metal Injection Moulding (MIM).
