Ortofon 2M Bronze Replacement Stylus

Why buy the Ortofon Stylus 2M Bronze

What stylus profile does the 2M Bronze use and why does it matter?

The Stylus 2M Bronze uses a nude Fine Line diamond with a tip radius of r/R 8/40 µm. A nude-mounted diamond is cut and polished as a single piece rather than bonded to a metal shank, which keeps moving mass low at the point where the stylus meets the groove. The Fine Line profile gives the stylus a tracking ability of 80 µm at 315 Hz, the maximum groove modulation it can follow at that frequency without mistracking. Frequency response is rated at 20 Hz to 20 kHz, +2/-0 dB, so output stays consistent across the audible range rather than rolling off unevenly at the frequency extremes.

Which cartridges accept this stylus?

This stylus is recommended for the 2M Bronze, 2MR Bronze and 2M Bronze Premounted cartridge bodies. As the wearing component of the cartridge assembly, fitting a replacement Stylus 2M Bronze to any of these three bodies restores the cartridge's original tracking and frequency response without needing to replace the generator or body itself.

What tracking force and tonearm setup does it need?

The 2M Bronze operates within a tracking force range of 1.4 to 1.7 g (14 to 17 mN), with a recommended setting of 1.5 g (15 mN), and a tracking angle of 20 degrees. Dynamic lateral compliance is rated at 22 µm/mN, which describes how readily the cantilever moves in response to groove modulation and which needs to match the effective mass of the tonearm for the stylus to track accurately at the recommended force. A cartridge alignment tool helps confirm stylus position relative to the groove when setting tracking force and angle during installation.

How is the stylus identified once fitted?

The Stylus 2M Bronze has a bronze-coloured stylus housing, distinguishing it visually from other styli in the 2M range when checking which stylus is fitted to a cartridge body.

How long does the stylus last before it needs replacing?

With proper care, the stylus can be used for up to 1000 hours without a drop in performance. Beyond that point, wear at the diamond tip alters contact geometry at the groove wall, affecting tracking ability and frequency response in the same way a mismatched stylus profile would.
