Graham LS5/8 is a two-way, reflex-loaded monitor that builds on the BBC’s original large speaker platform. The heart of the system is a bespoke 12-inch Diaphnatone polypropylene bass/midrange driver, developed specifically for this application by Volt Loudspeakers. This custom driver is engineered to deliver extended low-frequency depth and enhanced dynamic authority without compromising midband accuracy.

To preserve the LS5/9’s celebrated vocal clarity and tonal neutrality, Graham has matched the 300mm bass/mid unit with the same Audax HD13D34H 34mm dome tweeter used in the LS5/9. This tweeter’s low-distortion, natural high-frequency character ensures seamless integration and consistent tonality across the LS series.

The result is a speaker system that captures the musicality and insight of the LS5/9 while offering increased scale, low-frequency reach, and the ability to energise larger spaces with minimal distortion or compression.

Graham Audio’s LS5/8 uses a critically damped thin-wall cabinet, constructed from high-grade 12mm birch plywood with hardwood batons, in line with BBC engineering principles. This structural approach controls panel resonances by shifting energy away from the sensitive midband, preserving tonal integrity and openness.

Mass-loading further attenuates unwanted colouration, and Rockwool acoustic insulation—chosen over typical foam materials—improves airflow damping and internal absorption. This maintains the integrity of the monitor’s bass response and supports coherent imaging.

Every enclosure is meticulously hand-assembled in the UK and finished in real wood veneers, with Teak and sprayed lacquer finishes available upon request.

This design builds on the original active LS5/8, replacing the electronic crossover with a highly refined passive crossover network by Derek Hughes. This update enhances stereo imaging, resolution, and transparency—exceeding the original active model’s performance while staying true to the stringent BBC specification.
